This article outlines adding employee numbers to AD when we’ve been requested to do so. First thing is to make sure you’ve got the ‘advanced features’ option checked in AD. Under the View tab, put a tick next to the option:
Now when you right click and go to ‘Properties’ on a user account, you’ll see the ‘Attribute Editor’ tab:
This shows an alphabetical list of all the AD attributes, some of which never get used, but the ‘employeenumber’ field is in there. If we need to edit it, it’s just a text field and can be typed directly into.
However, there’s a strange gotcha with this in that you can only see the ‘Attribute Editor’ tab if you browse through the OUs in AD, find the one with the user you want to edit and right click on the user account and select ‘Properties’ in the right hand window:
If you do a search for a user, double the account in the search window to display the account properties, then it doesn’t load the extra tab.
