If you get a call about a user whose taskbar icons have blanked out, you can restore them by browsing to the backup folder for it on their PC (amended the PC and username part of the string):
\\PCNameHere\c$\users\UserNameHere\appdata\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar
The items can then be dragged and dropped from that folder onto the taskbar.
