Windows Hello for Business - Sign in Without a Password

Summary

This article will explain what Windows Hello for Business is, how to check if your device is compatible and how to use it.

What is Windows Hello?

Windows Hello enables you to sign into your laptop using facial recognition, fingerprint, or a PIN instead of using a password. It’s easier and safer to sign into your PC because your PIN/Biometrics are only associated with the device you set them up on.

The information (i.e. fingerprint) is only stored on the device you set it up on and is not accessible to anyone else (even the people in IT can’t access it).

Is my device compatible?

All Laptops used at StepChange use a password and are compatible for a PIN Number. Lenovo’s don’t have access to fingerprint or facial recognition.

For HP Devices you can check to see if your device is eligible below. If your device is able to do facial recognition and the fingerprint login you will need to choose which one you would like.  Both can’t be enabled at the same time.

To identify if your HP laptop is compatible for fingerprint sign-in look on the right-hand side of your track pad, below the keys for a fingerprint sensor (shown below) and if it’s there you can set this up.

To identify if your HP laptop is compatible for facial recognition look at the physical camera on your laptop if there is an extra sensor next to it (a small black circle- that looks like a second camera) then you will be able to set this up. See images below.

How can I set this up?

This will be available on all devices and automatically set up if someone gets a device from a laptop swap or is new to the charity. The Service Desk team can ensure you have the right permissions if you would like this feature, raise a Service Request (Link Below) and once this has been complete, you’ll be prompted to set it up on your next log in.

Don’t Forget

You will still need to use your password and the Okta app for the VPN. If you use RDS web you will need to log into this with your password not the PIN or Biometrics.
